Best Books I Read in 2018:

This year I read 80 books.  These are what I consider the best of the list (in the order I read the books).

1. Maus I a Survivor's Tale - My Father Bleeds History by Art Spiegelman (1991) Pantheon Books

The Special Pulitzer Prize winning graphic novel about his father and his experiences in World War II going from a successful garment salesman, then evading capture and then into Aushwitz

Maus II a Survivor's Tale - And Here My Troubles Began by Art Spiegelman  (1991) Pantheon Books

A continuation of the earlier work that tells of his father's life in the camps until he is reunited with his wife after the war.

2. Mr. Majestyk by Elmore Leonard (2002) Mariner Books

All he wants to do is get his melon crop harvested and to market.  But he let his temper get away from him when a local hoodlum tries to drive off his workers and replace them with drunks.  He ends up on a bus with a killer whose crew tries to break him out and now he has to deal with that man.

3. The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill (2016) Algonquin

Each year, in the Protectorate, a child must be sacrificed to the Witch.  But one year, the witch, who feeds each child starlight and takes them to a better place and finds good parents, accidentally feeds one child from the moon and keeps her because her magic will be too wild for most people to control.

4. Artemis by Andy Weir (2017) Ballantine Books

Mr. Weir is back, this time using the actual name of a NASA project to establish a colony on the moon.  A girl living on the moon in the Artemis colony, saves her city by breaking all the rules 

5. The Neon Rain by James Lee Burke (1987) Henry Holt & Co.

Dave Robicheaux, a Lieutenant in the New Orleans Police department struggles with the death of a young woman in another Parrish that is written-off as a drowning death.  He is sure it was a murder and checking into the case causes a lot of bad guys to come out of the woodwork - even his partner.  When his brother gets shot, he goes after the mobster who was supposed to be his friend.

6. Red Sparrow by Jason Matthews (2013) Scribner

A ballerina is intentionally injured by a competitor and wreaks her revenge.  Then she is offered a way to keep her mother in their apartment by becoming a spy. She is sent to Sparrow school, where she is trained to seduce foreign diplomats so they can be blackmailed to give up state secrets.

7. Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King (2014) Scribner

Bill Hodges, a retired detective is contacted by the mass murderer about his last case.  Only now, the killer plans on something much more elaborate and deadly.

8. The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman (2013) William Morrow

An old man returns to his childhood neighbor's home and remembers that the pond in the back was called the ocean.

Excellent writing from a master storyteller - it includes the mythic triple goddess of the maiden, the mother and the crone.  Gaiman has mixed mythology, fantasy and reflection of the fears of our childhood and the cost of the mistakes in our lives.  It starts with a wonderful epigraph: "I remember my own childhood vividly . . . I knew terrible things.  But I knew I mustn't let adults know I knew.  It would scare them."  -Maurice Sendak

9. The Women in the Castle by Jessica Shattuck (2017) William Morrow

Three very different women live through World War II in a castle in Germany.

10. The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith aka J K Rowling (2013) Mulholland Books

Cormorant Strike, a disabled British veteran MP is now a private detective with a ruined love life, enough bills to sink his business and a new temp receptionist.  He’s also the son of a rock star.  A client wants him to find the murderer of their famous model sister, whom has been ruled a suicide.

The Blue Tower by J.B. Simmons (2018) Three Cord Press 

A boy finds himself in the water near a blue tower and then becomes a student who needs to be scoured of the bad in his former life.

Origin by Dan Brown (2017) Doubleday 

A former student of Professor Langford, a futurist, presents arguments to the world via live streaming over the internet, that he expects will greatly hurt religion.  But before he can present the most damaging evidence, he is killed by a sniper.

The First Year by Nora Roberts (2017) St. Martin’s Press 

A virus kills off over 80% of the world's population and magic blooms in some of the survivors to balance the event.  Some of it is light and some is the darkest evil.  A witch bears a child who may become the savior of the world.

The Hellfire Club by Jake Tapper (2018) Little Brown & Co 

An ex-army professor is appointed to serve-out the term of a murdered congressman.  But he soon finds himself in over his head with a conspiracy that may have started in the time of Ben Franklin.

L'Amerique by Thierry Sagnier (2018) Apprentice House 

A memoir of the author’s life growing up in France, after the war, then in the U.S. where his father was employed, and his mother struggled to adapt.

The Kremlin's Candidate by Jason Matthews (2018) Scribner 

Our heroine, the red sparrow, has become the head of the SVR, the spy ring for Russia and has found herself on the inside of Putin's closest advisers.  But her immediate boss suspects there is a mole at the highest levels.  Meanwhile, he has positioned a Navy Rear Admiral, whom he has used for a decade, to become the head of the CIA.

Uprooted by Naomi Novik (2015) Del Rey 

A young woman, Agneiszka,  is of an age to be among those selected once every ten years by a local wizard.  Everyone expects her best friend, the prettiest girl in the valley to be selected, but instead it is her, the homeliest, most disaster-prone girl in the valley.  When she questions why he selected her, in his tower, he tells her she is a witch.  She turns out not to be any witch, but one with Baba Jaga's capabilities.  And between them they rescue the Queen, who has been a captive of the Wood for the last twenty years and deal with all the disasters that come to Agneiszka so naturally.

The Women in the Castle by Jessica Shattuck (2017) William Morrow 

Three very different women live through World War II in a castle in Germany.

Maximum Bob by Elmore Leonard (1991) Delacorte Press 

Bob is a judge, and not a nice one.  While he hands down maximum sentences for the least perceived slight in the courtroom, he is always trying to bed any woman he comes across, in spite of the fact that he is married.  

Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs (2008) Ace 

A side series to Mercy Thompson featuring Anna, an Omega, and Charles, her mate and the Marrock’s son and enforcer.  The Moor is a  very old werewolf and now he and the pack are threatened by an old enemy.

Dead and Alive by Dean Koontz (2009) Del Rey Books

The third volume in the Frankenstein Epic - our two intrepid New Orleans cops get on the move and find they have to protect their household - Deucalian helps move a child to Tibet through a doorway and the new humans in the dump are changed and no longer feel the need to kill humans - all due to a unique creature who can reach into their minds and change their programming.  The whole point of the novel is to isolate and kill Victor Frankenstein, destroy his work and free the world from the threat of dominance.  But he is always a step ahead.

The Golden Elephant by Alex Archer (92008) Gold Eagle 

In which Annja Creed is commissioned to find and extract an ancient artifact - in competition with a tomb robber.

Mistborn: The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson (2008) Tor Books 

In which Vin and her husband, the Emperor Elend, try to save the world from Ruin.

Mistborn: The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson (2007) Tor Books 

In which Vin, who has killed the Lord Ruler God, and her betrothed, Elend find the Well and are deceived into releasing Ruin.

Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson (2006) Tor Books 

\In which a street urchin, Vin, is mistborn and becomes the apprentice of Kelsier, who wants to overthrow the final empire.

Cerulean Sins by Laurell K Hamilton (2003) Berkley 

Our vampire executioner, Anita Blake, now a leopard shapeshifter, finds herself in the midst of a power play by vampires. Her friend, the master vampire of St. Louis is under threat from his oldest ancestor, sending one of her most powerful underlings to take over his territory.

Finders Keepers by Stephen King (2015) Scribner 

The second book in the Mr. Mercedes series.  Bill Hodges and Holly Gibney started a detective agency and named it Finders Keepers.  Now they have to help a boy who has stumbled upon the notebooks of a famous author that had been stolen and hidden by a dangerous killer.  And now the killer has been released.

The Language of Bees by Laurie R King (2009) Bantam 

Mary Russel and her husband, Sherlock Holmes, have returned at last to their home in England.  There seems to be a problem with the beehives, which solution has to be put off in pursuit of a killer.

Beautiful Exiles by Meg Waite Clayton (2018) Lake Union Publishing 

Narrated by Martha Gelhorn, a war correspondent and the fourth wife of Ernest Hemingway.  It is so well written it inspires the reader to be a writer.

The Crooked Staircase by Dean Koontz (2018) Bantam 

Further adventures of Jane Hawk in her fight against the Arcadian conspiracy - wherein she captures the son of the 75-year-old woman who may be the top of the scheme and the Arcadians close in on Jane’s son.

Living Dead in Dallas by Charlaine Harris (2009) Ace 

Sookie’s friend, Lafayette is killed and placed in Andy Bellfleur's car - Sookie goes to Dallas to help the local head vampire find a lost friend.  He's been kidnapped by another vampire who wants to meet the dawn, and burn out of existence, Godric, and taken to the Fellowship of the Sun, a radical group that wants to rid the world of vampires.

Only Time Will Tell by Jeffrey Archer (2011) St. Martin’s Press 

A rambling story about a boy, Harry Clifton, born from an encounter that wasn’t intended.  His mother married another man a month after conception.  The man he has been told was his father ended-up trapped in the skin of a ship during construction.  His real father is the heir to a Lord.  The book is part of a seven volume chronicle, this first volume covers the time between World War I and World War II.

Fire Touched by Patricia Briggs (2016) Ace 

Mercy Thompson and the werewolf pack come to the rescue to rid the Tri-Cities of a Troll on a bridge and the rescue of Zee (a high elf), Tad and a fire touched boy.  This results in a public statement of protection from Mercy and an impending war with the fae.

Palace of Treason by Jason Matthews (2015) Scribner

Dominika, the red sparrow, after being returned to Russia, is placed under the worst possible member of counterintelligence.  She continues to work with the CIA.  When her boss tries to have her killed, twice, she survives, and provides information that gets the attention of Putin, to the blinding jealousy of her boss.  

Never Go Back by Lee Child (2013) Bantam 

Reacher goes to Washington - to see the Major who is running the 110th, but it turns out that something else is going on and Reacher finds himself and the Major under arrest

Victor Frankenstein is still alive, 200 years later.  So is his first creation, who calls himself Deucalion, the son of Prometheus.  Frankenstein has never stopped creating artificial people, only now he has far more science available to use.

Hombre by Elmore Leonard (1961) Ballentine 

A man raised by the Apache is on his way with other locals when they are held-up by robbers for a corrupt Indian Agent's stolen money.

Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris (2008) Ace 

First in the Stackhouse mysteries wherein Sookie must navigate her way through becoming enamored of vampires and her brother being accused of murdering their grandmother and a nest of vampires.

Tourist Trap by Julie Smith (1986) Mysterious Press 

Rebecca Schwartz, native San Franciscan and lawyer, must prove the innocence of a former cable car driver accused of multiple murders.

Spell Breaker by Connie Suttle (2018) SubtleDemon 

In the fourth volume of the First Ordinance series, our winged heroine,  must go without her wings back to her original way of being unobtrusive, by not speaking - making those around her think she cannot speak and revealing secrets that can save the universe.

Night Broken by Patricia Briggs (2014) Ace Books

Mercy Thompson, the walker who shifts into a coyote finds herself in a bind.  Her husband, the Alpha Wolf in a werewolf pack, gets an urgent call from his ex - she's being hunted by a man she dated and he is killing people trying to get to her.  Of course, he's not human.

Locked Rooms by Laurie R King (2005) Bantam

Mary Russel and Sherlock Holmes, her husband, visit her family's home in San Francisco so she can settle some of the estate.  She has nightmares that include a locked room that she knows is there.  She has to confront her past, the earthquake, the accident that killed her parents and brother and the lodge her father and his friend built.

The Inquisitor's Tale by Adam Gidwitz (2016) Dutton

Told in tales like Chaucer, a greyhound saves the life of a little baby, but her owners think she slew the baby and kill her.  When they find the snake and the live baby, they bury the dog in the forest and mark the grave.  Soon the dog is treated like a local saint.  But the church is suspicious of such behavior and send out an inquisitor to stamp out such belief.  When the girl is about ten, she visits the grave and the dog is sitting on top waiting for her.  In the meantime, in a Jewish village, some teenage boys set the village on fire and one mother kicks a hole in the back of her mud hut and tells her boy to run and meet up with her in Saint Denis.  At the same time a very large boy, one whose father was a lord and mother was an African Muslim, is told the monastery can no longer afford to feed him and sends him to Saint Denis.  A group of knights come to the little girls village to take her and the dog away for trial in Saint Denis.  And the adventure begins - all stories told in an inn.

Freaky Deaky by Elmore Leonard (1988) Arbor House

An officer in Detroit, assigned to the bomb squad, asks for a transfer to satisfy his girlfriend.  He ends-up in sex crimes, she kicks him out, which gets him suspended since he doesn't have an address in Detroit.  In the meantime, a man and a woman who used to know each other in the old, protest movement days, conspire to con someone they knew who in inherited millions by scaring him with bombs.  Bombs kill people and our ex-cop hopes to catch the killers and get his job back.

The final installment of Sandman with only a couple of cameos from the main character - this set questions reality

Lily Bard's customer is the town trollop - Lily finds her dead in her car in the woods.  But the scene is too perfect.  

4th of July by James Patterson (2005) Little Brown & Co.

The Lieutenant chases a couple of teens joyriding away from a murder scene, they crash the car and Lyndsey and her partner holster their guns to help the kids from the burning vehicle, but the kids pull their own guns and shoot them.  From the ground, Lyndsey shoots back, killing the girl and permanently disabling the boy.  The result is a wrongful death lawsuit against Lyndsey and the police department.  While waiting for trial in Half Moon Bay, a series of murders occurs there.  Lyndsey is torn between waiting for a trail and wanting to solve a case out of her jurisdiction.  

Night Shift by Charlaine Harris (2016) Ace 

The residents of Midnight, TX have to deal with a demon who has been trapped at the crossroads for 250 years.  The Reeds' secret purpose is revealed, Etruscan writing is interpreted, Manfred meets his grandfather and great-grandfather, and Mr. Snuggly proves to be the King of the Magic Jungle

The Atopia Chronicles by Matthew Mather (2014) 47North

Near the end of the century, man has ffound a way to split his mind and explore his imagination in a multiverse.  Atopia is an independent city state floating in the Pacific Ocean.  But someone is trying to destroy Atopia and everything it stands for.

The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje (1992) Bloomsbury

A modern classic of English literature - the 'patient' is a story about a Hungarian who helped the Germans in WWII.  A former cartographer, he fell in an ill-fated love affair with a colleague's wife and suffered burns over his whole body in an airplane crash.  The Bedouin transported him to a British hospital in Cairo and from there he was transferred north until he reached a field hospital in Italy in a Villa.  There we meet a nurse, a thief and a sapper.

Won the Booker Prize.

Vengeance in Death by J.D. Robb (1997) Berkeley Books

Lieutenant Dallas finds herself at the focal point of a series of murders in retaliation for the deaths of six murderers from twenty years ago - deaths done in vengeance by her husband. 

Dragon Teeth by Michael Crichton (2018) Harper 

A view of the times of Custer and Deadwood where the viewpoint character is a spoiled rich kid joining an archaeological expedition as a photographer and finds the teeth of a brontosaurus.

Shakespeare's Christmas by Charlaine Harris (1998) Minotaur Books 

A little girl was stolen as an infant eight years ago.  Our heroine, the tough Ms. Bard goes home for her sister's wedding and finds her beau is checking into three girls the right age, including the daughter of her soon to be brother-in-law.

Narcissus in Chains by Laurell K Hamilton (2001) Berkley

Anita Blake returns to St Louis to find havoc has reigned while she was gone - she has to rescue her wereleopard pard, reassert herself as the werewolf pack Lupa and solve the disappearance of several alphas in the community.

Roses are Red by James Patterson (2001) Grand Central Publishing

Different gangs of criminals are killing and robbing banks Alex Cross has to find the mastermind behind all of the crimes.

Every heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire (2016) Tor

Where young people go to learn how to move on in this life after returning from a fantastic journey to a world that feels more like home than this one.

Day Shift by Charlaine Harris (2015) Ace

A Midnight, Texas novel wherein our hero, Manfred, does a reading for a favorite client, who drops dead and passes through his connection to her husband.  Her son accuses Manfred of stealing her jewels (which she hid).  At the same time, a young man, growing amazingly fast is brought to town to be looked after by the Rev, who isn't very good at looking after, even if they are both were-tigers.

Our hero, Daniel, continues down the list of aliens on Earth. But it is not an easy task and other people start to get involved.
